The Program for Intensive English welcomes all students (age 16 and older) to study in our program. We offer academic English classes to international students and the local Indianapolis population. Our classes are diverse. Students of all ages from all backgrounds study English at the PIE.
Local students already in Indiana can study part-time or full-time at the PIE.
If you are living in Indiana with any status, and are interested in taking professional, academic English classes - please read more below on studying English at the PIE!
Local students are anyone who is already in Indiana. We accept all students age 16 and older to study at the PIE. All classes at the PIE are in-person, on the IU Indianapolis campus, located in downtown Indianapolis.
Our classes meet Monday through Friday during the day. The earliest a class may begin is 8:30 AM, and the latest a class may end is 3:30 PM.
If you will study full-time, you will take 3 classes per day. If you will study part-time, you may take 1 or 2 classes per day. But, you will still have class everyday Monday through Friday!
We recommend that you are free and available to take classes each day, Monday through Friday, during these times.
Exact schedules depend on your level and the session. Students will receive their exact schedule, for their level, during orientation.
PIE offers academic-focused English courses. Class sizes are small and our teachers have degrees and experience in teaching English to non-native speakers.
We have 7 different levels of English, ranging from beginner to advanced academic. You will take a test during orientation to determine your starting level. Then, you will select your classes. Local students can choose if they want to study full-time (all 3 classes) or part-time (1 or 2 classes).
Studying full-time means that you will take all 3 classes in your level:
Listening & Speaking
Reading & Writing
Structure in Use (Grammar)
Hard-working students can typically pass 1 level in 1 session!
You will also have the opportunity to learn about student success strategies, American culture, and much more while studying at the PIE.

Studying part-time means that you will take all only 1 or 2 classes in your level. You have many options for classes. You can choose 1 below:
Grammar: 4-5 hours of class per week
Listening/Speaking: 8-10 hours of class per week
Reading/Writing: 8-10 hours of class per week
Grammar and Listening/Speaking: 12-15 hours of class per week
Grammar and Reading/Writing: 12-15 hours of class per week
Listening/Speaking and Reading/Writing: 16-20 hours of class per week
Full Time (All 3 classes): 20-25 hours of class per week
In order to pass your level, you must take and pass all 3 classes in that level. So, part-time students will take at least 2 sessions to pass their level at PIE.
